Cracked: Stories from the Arizona Trail Race
The Arizona National Scenic Trail is an 800-mile,
mostly singletrack route from Mexico to Utah,
winding through Arizona’s diverse backcountry.
It is one of the premier long distance trails in the US.
Every fall, a group of bikepackers gathers at the Mexico
border for the opportunity to test themselves against
the trail, each other, and Arizona’s unforgiving landscapes.
This is a non-stop and self-supported
unofficial race to the Utah border called the Arizona Trail Race, or AZT800.
Throughout the event, racers can call in and
leave messages with stories from the trail.
This is a compilation of those stories, a look at how the
2024 event unfolded through the words of the racers.
Big thanks to ...

The Range of Light: Skiing Roper's Sierra High Route
Просмотров 10 тыс.5 лет назад
The Sierra High Route is a 200 mile off-trail route running South to North along the Sierra Crest in California. It parallels the John Muir Trail, but stays mostly above treeline and covers more rugged terrain. It is the brainchild of Steve Roper, and relatively few people have completed it, especially in winter. Sachin Sawant, Matt Fox, and Aaron Johnson skied the entire route in April of 2019.

In April of 2014, about 17 of us lined up along the desolate Mexican border in Arizona, and headed north in a race across the deserts, mountains, forests, and canyons of Arizona, headed for Utah. This is the story of how my race unfolded. The Arizona Trail Race is a self-supported mountain bike race along the famed Arizona Trail. Starting at the Mexico border, there are two distance options: 30...

2011 Vision Quest Mountain Bike Race
Priceless
loved this. Happy to see Jdoob getting the love he deserves. Dudes good at everything he does, what a bastard.
Just keep rewatching!
Aaron, thank you for putting this together. An excellent followup to your 2014 masterpiece. Congratulations on finishing again, and capturing it all for us. I love what this race has become, and all the wonderful people that call it a home. There were so many good call-ins and characters this go 'round. Thanks to everyone that makes the AZTR what it is!
Thanks Scott! All owed to the vision you and the other early bikepack race pioneers had 20 some odd years ago!
Love you guys tons
Absolutely awesome, I enjoyed your video immensely. You captured the beauty of the AZT and joined that with the people experiencing it! Fantastic, thank you. -mk
Thanks Max, sorry we didn't get to meet out there but maybe 2025?
@ most definitely, looking forward to it! You’re also welcome to come join in on the Oregon timber trail group start July 12th!
@@mostlyforever mighty tempting, it's relatively close by!
The Hardest bikepacking race in the World IMHO
That was one of the most impressive feats I've seen. And the title of the film is so very fitting. Thanks to all the beasts on bikes.
I am an ultra mtb racer and this is a level shift... congrats to all of the riders. I understand and felt the comments in my heart when the riders commented on what the f they were thinking. The format of real time calls was brilliant... kudos to the racers and the amazing people who put this film together.
Thank you!
This video was so awesome! I loved seeing and listening to the call ins. Congratulations to everyone that finished! You all are amazing!
Aaron and all you racers. Outstanding job! Everyone who attempted kudos for giving it a shot. Aaron great to see back out there, as always your pics and videos are great to watch.
Great way to do a bikepacking race video, enjoyed this very much!
Awesome ❤
Absolutely stunning! Thank you
Hey man, congrats on an inspiring ride on the AZT! I loved this video. Makes me wanna give it a shot one of these years.
Thanks! I hope you do!
Raising the bar for race vids yet again. 10 years ago your video gave me a trip down memory lane, this one was like you took me along on the ride with all of my friends. Thanks for including so many others it really adds to the finished product.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Epic!
So good. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@9aaronj ya man. Doobies is a friend of mine here in Estes Park. Pretty amazing riding by all of these hooligans.
Wow! Great video with a smart format. This needs to be an annual thing. Would be great to see it done for other races like the TD
Thanks! Maybe if I have time someday to do TD I’ll make another one!
That would be a lot for a single person to tackle annually, just a montage of MtbCast annually would be sweet thou.
what???? just moved to buckeye how did i not hear about this! great video , I want in!!!!
aww, thanks for this, AJ. I laughed so hard the way you pieced together mine and johnny call in about the grass hahahaha
I'm surprized he wasn't disqualified for that potentially dangerous prank!
Haha @ahouchin01 it was too good not to include! And @jeremy he was joking……
@@jeremylukedominicbate7482 lol it was definitely a joke. The grass came from the Canelos.
So good!
Wow! That was great ! Thx
Hey Aaron, awesome film, thank you so much for sharing this with the community! I have aspirations of through biking the trail which lead me to this video. When I followed the link to the race info it looked like it dropped off in 2019. Is there still a community of racers out there? I'd love to give it a burn! Cheers
Hello, I am planning to do the Stone King tour club next year August. What month did you guys go? How elevate gain after shuttle drop off on average per day? Thank you in advance for any feedback and tips you can offer.
We went in late August. Average day involved anywhere from 2,000-5,000 feet of elevation gain, not including the shuttles.
@@9aaronj thank you for the the fyi..
I’ve been watching this video for almost 10 years any time I need fired up on riding. Thanks for making these, Aaron.
U can do it
What an incredible experience you guys must have had. So you carried 3 or 4 days of food to the resupply and planned for 7 days or did you exceed the planned mileage? I hiked the JMT when I was 20 and now I've got this winter SHR bug in my late 40's. So psyched on this video, thanks for doing it. Would love to hear about how your logistic plan versus how reality played out.
We did one food drop pre trip around the mammoth crest.
why did you show 95% downhill, which poorly represents the 20,000 feet of elevation gained. I wish you would have shown the climbing instead. This is just my unsolicited Opinion.
kids call it toxic masculinity we are encouraged to assume we can treat our bodies like sht and still be alive and well at 98+
i think a lot of the people who put themselves thru severe sleep deprevation, and starvation, and junk food highly refined white powders, are......self harming they return home weighing less, are sick for a while i mean, is it really worth it to weaken yourself? to poison your delicate organic gi tract [the only thing keeping u alive] nothing would make me do this much damage to myself
i push=hike i get off and push the bike up long hills is there a niche for me oh hell no, course not, it's not "macho" enough
Question: What is a Nose for??? Learn to breathe. Use your Nose, that's what it is there for. Your nose is directly linked to your brain = releases the good drugs. <3 happy happy days.
Salute to the wonderful journey and beautiful friendship.
Why is Muir Hut's fireplace blocked-in?
No fires above certain elevations are allowed now. Law was written post hut construction, Keeps the snow/precip out better now as well.
What a great trip. I'll never get to do that, so I love seeing you guys on the route. Amazing.
Great video!
I chose Miami! The best options for bikepackers - no mountains, no dirt, no dust, no campsite... only horrible expensive hotels, nice b(it)eaches and sun ;-) ruclips.net/video/sidOzM5oFgc/видео.html

I still find time to watch this. At very minimum 3k views is me... Minimum, but I’m pretty sure it’s more like 5k views.
Hey! Nice video, quick question, did you had trouble getting water? Thanks:)
For the most part, no. I think we only had 1 night where we couldn't find a campsite near a water source and had to melt snow. Easy to find streams and use our water bottle on a string technique to scoop water.
I am planning on doing the same thing this spring, do you mind exchanging emails? I would have a couple of questions
The RUclips algorithm sent me a good one today.
solid
Dudes, "Sweet" trip. No words... they are all yours. As, such as I , You will never forget the high country. I never do. Always go back for more. That beer melted right down, I know!
how do these trails not get overgrown?
Wow! a great video ......thanks. totally envious.
Fascinating. Would love to do something like this someday.
I almost cried at the scene you guys drunk beer. Amazing job!
It's on my bucket list. Though racing is not my agenda.
WHAT A BUNCH OF CRY BABIES....KILLING ME
